Smart Updates: Business Central Automatically Unpublishes Unused PTEs

If you’ve been working with Per-Tenant Extensions (PTEs) in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, you’ve probably run into this situation before:

You publish a new version (say, Version N) of your PTE to a tenant. The system automatically uninstalls Version N-1 and installs the new one. But here’s the catch — Version N-1 still lingers in your environment, not uninstalled, just sitting there unpublished.

And if you’re not following Microsoft best practices (or just have a developer who forgot to clean up after themselves), your environment can start looking like a PTE graveyard — cluttered with outdated versions that serve no purpose and slow things down.

Microsoft has introduced a quality-of-life improvement for Business Central SaaS environments:

Any uninstalled version of a PTE will now be automatically unpublished after a Business Central new version is installed.

How It Works – Step by Step

  • Business Central Version Used: 26.2

  • 📦 Extension Setup: Installed a PTE with three versions, the latest being v1.0.0.2

  • 🗓️ Scheduled Update: Upgraded the environment to Business Central 26.3

  • 🧹 Post-Update Result:

    • Business Central automatically removed all uninstalled versions of the extension

    • Only the currently installed version (v1.0.0.2) was retained

✨ A simple process that brings cleaner environments with zero manual cleanup!

Installed a my PTE with 3 versions

Scheduled update to BC26.3

And finally the result…!!!

Why This Matters?

  • 🧹 Cleaner environments – no more clutter of unused PTE versions.

  • 💼 Easier maintenance – less manual work for developers and admins.

  • 🔄 Smoother deployments – especially for frequent PTE updates.

  • 🧘 Peace of mind – no risk of accidental re-publishing old versions.

This might seem like a small change, but for those managing multiple tenants and regular extension updates, it’s a huge time-saver and a step forward in automation and repository hygiene.

Goodbye Clutter. Hello Clean SaaS.

Microsoft continues to refine the Business Central experience with small but impactful improvements like this one. It’s yet another reason to love the pace of innovation in the Business Central SaaS ecosystem.

So go ahead — update your PTEs. Business Central has your back.

Stay tuned..!
