“The record is locked…” Not anymore! Discover Business Central’s new feature for concurrent inventory posting.

In warehouse and operations environments, speed and concurrency matter. But have you ever encountered the message “The record is locked by another user” while trying to post inventory transactions in Dynamics 365 Business Central?

if so, you’re not alone.

By default, Business Central prevents simultaneous posting to the same inventory records to ensure data consistency. However, in busy environments where multiple users need to post inventory journals, sales shipments, or purchase receipts concurrently, this behaviour can become a bottleneck.

With recent updates BC26.x, Business Central now allows organizations to configure simultaneous posting of inventory transactions—safely and efficiently.

Let’s break down how to enable it, when to use it, and what to consider.

If you enable the feature, Business Central assigns entry numbers for each table from SequenceNumbers in the database, which allows more people to post transactions at the same time. The result can be that sometimes inventory entries from two or more transactions are interleaved. For example, an item register might contain any or all of the entry tables, as shown in the following image.

If you don’t enable the feature, when someone posts an inventory transaction the tables are locked and other users can’t post inventory transactions. Business Central finds the last entry in each table and assigns a number that’s one higher. This numbering ensures that entries that belong to the same register are consecutive, but prevents other people from posting at the same time.

Why Allow Simultaneous Posting?

Allowing multiple users to post inventory transactions at the same time can:

  • Speed up warehouse and production operations.
  • Reduce user frustration due to locking issues.
  • Support high-volume environments without sacrificing accuracy.

This feature is especially valuable for companies with multiple warehouse users, automated background jobs, or API-based integrations that post frequently.

How to Enable Simultaneous Posting in Business Central

  • Use the Tell Me search bar in Business Central.
  • Search for “Feature Management” page.
  • Search for “Enable multiple users to post item ledger entries and value entries at the same time
  • and “Feature Update: Enable multiple users to post warehouse entries at the same time
  • update the “Enable for” to “All User

Example Use Case

Imagine a warehouse team where:

  • One user is posting a Physical Inventory Journal for finished goods.
  • Another is posting a Sales Shipment from a different location.
  • At the same time, an integration tool is posting a Purchase Receipt.

With Allow Simultaneous Posting enabled, all three can post at the same time—without stepping on each other’s toes—as long as they aren’t working on the same items.

Conclusion

Enabling simultaneous inventory posting is a small configuration with big benefits. It empowers your team to work more efficiently, supports modern automated integrations, and helps reduce user friction during critical posting operations.

If you’re working in a high-volume environment—or if your users frequently post inventory transactions—you should definitely explore this setting.
